Leaders carry the culture.

Effective leadership is the key to unlocking an engaged workforce. In fact, Gallup reports that 70% of variance in employee engagement is determined solely by their manager.

Yet, most leaders never receive the necessary training to excel as a leader – much less, how to act in a way that intentionally activates the culture needed to support the organization's broader aims.

A 2024 study by the Chartered Management Institute revealed that 82% of new managers don't receive any formal leadership training.

Why is culture important?

Every organization has a culture. It's just a matter of if it's intentional or not.

Unintentional cultures are expensive and often untenable.

If it's not intentional, the organization has unintentionally created a culture that likely isn't supporting its growth – or, worse, might be harming its future. It shows up in many ways, such as quiet quitting, turnover, low productivity... you name it. Left unchecked long enough, it can tank the business.

Intentional cultures directly support growth and success.

Everyone wants it. A culture that attracts the best and brightest. A workplace so healthy, employees can't imagine leaving. High productivity, low turnover. Happy employees, and a bright future for the business. But creating an intentional culture takes work – messy, beautiful, eye-opening work.

Dr. W. Edwards Deming estimated that 94% of workplace issues are systemic.

Five drivers make the difference.

In our experience over the last four decades, we've seen that five factors drive successful culture:

  1. Activation from above
  2. Trust and shared purpose
  3. Leader effectiveness
  4. Actionable people data
  5. Systems that support leaders

The problem is not the framework or its effectiveness. The problem is the question we hear all the time: "Where do we start?"

How are you showing up as a leader?

To your meetings... your people... your strategy... yourself... your family?

If you want to shape your culture, you need to be thoughtful, reflective, and intentional about how you show up (i.e., the ways you behave and the things you say).

One of the most high-impact skills for this is emotional intelligence. Because emotional intelligence at its core is helping you use skills that help you show up to the moments that you have as a leader.
